108.92 MPH on a Schwinn

I saw this bike at the Bicycle Museum of America's site.

It has wooden rims and weighed 26.5lbs. No information on the gear ratio.

Why would it have wooden rims?

It was built in 1941. Weight? How available was aluminum as a building material? When did bikes first have alloy wheels?

We didn't get into WWII until the end of 41. It seems unlikely that aluminum was diverted to war time usage.
